Teddy Norris

Some have described poetry as “a light and sound show.”

I have always revered the world of language and story, and I have a profound respect for the magic and power of words. After years of teaching literature and writing, in my middle years I began to write my own poetry and to look for ways to share.

There are many kinds of poetry, and many definitions. Some have described poetry as “a light and sound show,” and Robert DeMaria has written that poetry is “prose set to music.” The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge described poetry as “the best words in the best order.” Leonardo da Vinci said, “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”

I am committed to the idea that, just as with music and other types of art, anyone can understand and enjoy poetry, and helping someone “discover” poetry gives me great satisfaction. I believe my own poems come from the deepest and best part of who I am, and creating them is, for me, a form of spiritual practice. As difficult and frustrating as writing can often be, for me writing poetry is like entering a place of sanctuary, a place where I find serenity. When I create a poem that seems meaningful, perhaps even beautiful, then I feel I have been the recipient of a special kind of creative grace, a grace to be shared.
